Pianoforte — 88 pages in black and white
The grand piano is the most complex string instrument in Western culture. Both as a solo and as an accompanying instrument, it is essential to different music genres like classic, jazz and rock. While hiding its complex interior in a “Black Box”, the use of its keyboard is accessible and self-explanatory.
We decided to set the focus on the mechanical aspects of the instrument in order to explain how the technical evolution provided more and more possibilities for individual and artistic expression. The book “Pianoforte — 88 pages in black&white” (the piano has 88 keys in black&white) depicts the historic and acoustic evolution of the instrument, packed with a multitude of digitally hand crafted technical illustrations.
